Overview
Coach Mark Ballard is a Judo black belt and has over 50 years of experience training, teaching, and competing in the art of Judo. In this program Mark teaches the fundamental grips, throws, foot sweeps, and defensive strategies of Judo from the standing position. A high emphasis is placed on training safety. Coach Ballard’s traditional style of Judo will compliment the skills learned in our BJJ programs. The Judo Fundamentals class is fun, and is a great way to get exercise.

Structure
This is a drilling and technique class, and as such sparring is not a part of this class. Students will be encouraged to spar if they choose in separate advanced classes once they have mastered the skills they need to train safely and with sufficient technique. We believe this approach not only maximizes the drill time for skill retention but makes this program a better fit for all students regardless of skill or experience level.

What is Judo?
Judo is a Japanese martial art founded in 1882 by Jigoro Kano. Judo is the most widely recognized style of “jacket-wrestling” and is known for its efficient and dynamic throwing techniques. In 1964 Judo became an official Olympic sport, and athletes all over the world train and compete in the art. Judo offers its practitioners an excellent outlet to relieve stress, get exercise, and learn valuable skills for personal protection. Judo techniques are often used in BJJ, MMA, and western wrestling competition.

Cross Training
Although our GU programs teach a wide array standing self defense and sportive techniques, BJJ students who cross train in Judo will gain an expanded understanding of the standing position. Cross training in Judo can help students looking to score more take-downs in their next grappling competition. Judo practitioners are excellent grip fighters and students will learn to set up throws and trips when their opponent has grips on their jacket (gi), or from the clinch. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu shines on the ground, and this class will offer additional ways to take the fight there!
